Thanksgiving Outfit Ideas 2026: Looks You Must Try

Hey Sunshines!

Thanksgiving 2026 is just around the corner and falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026. If your house is anything like mine, the menu planning has already started while the outfit planning is still very much a work in progress. I always tell myself I'll figure out what I'm wearing early, and every year it somehow becomes a "the night before" situation anyway. So this year I'm getting ahead of it, and bringing you along with me.

If you are hosting, heading to a family gathering, or squeezing in a Friendsgiving the weekend before, your outfit needs to pull double duty. This means cute enough for photos, comfortable enough to survive a second helping of mashed potatoes, and warm enough if you end up outside for a post-dinner walk to make room for pie.

I’ve put together a few Thanksgiving outfit ideas I'm actually wearing this year, plus a few more looks below if you want extra inspo before the big day. Let's get into it.

My Thanksgiving Outfits This Year

Look 1: Denim-on-Denim with a Western Twist

This one is giving cozy-but-put-together. I paired a dark wash denim shirt jacket over a simple black cami, layered it over dark flare jeans, and cinched everything with a black belt to keep the silhouette from feeling boxy. Platform loafers finish it off and give a little height, which matters when you're on your feet helping in the kitchen or sitting through a long dinner. This is my go-to when I want something that feels effortless but still photographs well for the family pictures.

Look 2: Tie-Dye Maxi Dress in Fall Tones

If you want something that feels a little more festive, this rust-and-orange tie-dye maxi dress is my pick. The circle print and warm ombré tones feel very "harvest table" without being a literal turkey sweater, and the matching tie-neck scarf detail dresses it up just enough. A sleeveless maxi like this is also easy to layer, like throw a cardigan or blazer over it if your host keeps the house a little cool, or wear it as-is if you're hosting and know your oven is going to be running all day.

Look 3: Burgundy Sweater with a Faux Fur Cropped Jacket

This is my "I want to look dressed up" option. A ribbed burgundy sweater is already a great Thanksgiving color on its own, but adding a black faux fur cropped jacket over it instantly elevates the whole look. I paired it with dark trousers and pointed black heels for something polished enough for a nicer family dinner, but the sweater underneath still keeps it comfortable enough to actually sit through the meal in.

More Thanksgiving Outfit Ideas to Try

Here are a few more directions to consider depending on your Thanksgiving plans:

1. The Leather Jacket Boho Fit

A flowy, printed boho top paired with a fitted leather jacket is a great way to balance the Thanksgiving fit. Add straight or flared jeans and knee-high or ankle boots, and you've got a look that feels effortlessly cool. This look is proof that you do not have to work too hard and still look so chic.

2. The Elastic-Waist Skirt and Sweater Combo

This one is a Thanksgiving cheat code. A flowy midi skirt with an elastic waistband paired with a cozy knit sweater gives you that "I definitely planned this" look, while your waistband quietly expands as needed. Tuck the sweater in loosely (not tightly) for the most forgiving silhouette, and finish with flats or ankle boots depending on the weather.

3. Wide-Leg Trousers or Jeans

If skirts and dresses aren't your thing, wide-leg trousers or jeans are a fantastic alternative. They skim past the stomach and hips instead of hugging them, which makes a huge difference by the time you're on your second helping of stuffing. Pair with a soft blouse or a chunky sweater, and you'll look polished from top to bottom while feeling like you're basically in pajamas from the waist down.

4. The Matching Loungewear Set

For a more relaxed Thanksgiving, a matching loungewear or sweatsuit set is having a real moment. Choose one in a rich fall color like rust, olive, or deep burgundy, add some gold jewelry and cute slippers or sneakers, and you'll look effortlessly stylish while being dressed, essentially, for a nap.

5. The Cozy Half-Zip and Leggings

This combo is perfect if your Thanksgiving involves travel, a Turkey Trot in the morning, or just running around helping in the kitchen before dinner. A half-zip pullover with leggings and clean sneakers keeps you comfortable through every part of the day, from prep to dinner to the post-meal wind-down.

What to Consider When Picking Your Thanksgiving Outfit

A few things I always think about before deciding what to wear:

  • Comfort after eating – This is not the day for anything too fitted at the waist. Elastic waistbands, wrap styles, and flowy silhouettes are your friends.

  • Layers for temperature changes - Ovens running, doors opening and closing, or maybe a walk outside. Layering pieces like cardigans, blazers, or cropped jackets lets you adjust throughout the day.

  • Color palette - Warm tones like rust, burgundy, mustard, olive, and cream naturally photograph well against a fall table setting, but don't feel like you have to match the food.

  • Shoes you can actually stand in - Between cooking, hosting, and mingling, comfortable shoes matter more on Thanksgiving than almost any other holiday.

What Fabrics Are Best for a Thanksgiving Dinner?

The fabric you choose can make a significant difference in how comfortable you feel after eating.

Some good options include:

  • Knit: Soft, flexible, and ideal for sweaters and dresses.

  • Jersey: Stretchy and comfortable for casual dresses and tops.

  • Stretch denim: Gives you the appearance of jeans without the stiffness of rigid denim.

  • Ponte: A structured knit that can look polished while offering some flexibility.

  • Satin: Great for dressier tops and skirts, although it may be less forgiving than knit fabrics.

For the ultimate comfort, prioritize fabrics that have some stretch and avoid extremely stiff or restrictive materials.

What to Wear Depending on Your Thanksgiving Plans

If you're hosting, go with something that lets you move freely in the kitchen but still looks nice for photos, a wrap dress or an elastic-waist skirt with a simple top works beautifully.

If you're a guest at a formal dinner, a sweater dress or wide-leg trousers with a nice blouse strikes the right balance between dressy and comfortable.

If you're doing a casual Friendsgiving, lean into the loungewear set or a ribbed midi dress with sneakers for an easy, laid-back vibe.

If you're traveling for the holiday, prioritize stretchy fabrics and layers you can adjust in the car, on a plane, or at your destination.

When Is Thanksgiving 2026?

Thanksgiving 2026 lands on Thursday, November 26, 2026. If you're planning a Friendsgiving separately, most people tend to schedule it the weekend before, so keep that in mind if you want a different outfit for each event.

Final Thoughts

However you're spending the day, your Thanksgiving outfit should feel like you. I'll probably end up rotating through all three of these looks depending on where I land that day, because that's just how my closet decisions go. But I hope this gave you a few new ideas to steal for your own Thanksgiving 2026 outfit.

Comment below which look is your favorite, and let me know what you're wearing this Thanksgiving! And while you're here, don't forget to check out my Holiday Gift Guide for 2026.
